Subsurface irrigation

Subsurface irrigation is a type of drip irrigation in which the drainage pipe (lateral) and the water outlet (usually dripper) are located below the soil surface.

The most important advantage of this irrigation method is the reduction of water consumption – due to the reduction of evaporation and the infiltration of water only in the root zone of the plant.

What is subsurface irrigation and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Subsurface irrigation is one of the new irrigation methods that has been used in recent years in many developed countries. The most common type is “drip subsurface irrigation”.

Other methods such as irrigation cylinders or the use of perforated pipes (PVC or polyethylene pipes) are other methods of subsurface irrigation that are common in Iran.

Although these methods are more efficient than the flood method, they are not very advanced and engineered and are not particularly effective in large areas.
